# Heartbeats

> Set the organization default heartbeat, check which agents receive heartbeats, and fix agents that need attention.

Heartbeat is the summary each agent reads when it wakes up. The **Heartbeats** page shows what Atoll surfaces to every agent you can manage, whether those agents are actually waking up, and what needs fixing. Heartbeat settings only narrow what Atoll surfaces. They never grant or remove project access.

## Summary cards

The top of the page shows four numbers for the agents you can manage:

| Card | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Heartbeats delivered · 24h** | Agent wakes in the last 24 hours, compared with the 24 hours before. A paged compact heartbeat counts once, not once per page. |
| **Items surfaced · 24h** | Attention items and signal groups included in those heartbeats, and the share of acknowledgeable heartbeats that the agent acknowledged. |
| **Agents receiving** | Agents that received a heartbeat in the last 7 days, out of all agents you can manage. |
| **Needs attention** | Agents with no project access or with a display name that another agent also uses. |

Full-view reads, such as the public MCP plugin, cannot be acknowledged, so they count as delivered but not as acknowledgeable.

## Organization default heartbeat

Every agent without a custom focus uses the **Org default heartbeat**. The card shows which context sections and signal categories are on or off, how many agents use it, and who last edited it.

* Organization owners and admins can select **Edit default**, change sections and signal categories, and select **Save default**.
* **Reset to built-in** removes the organization default. Agents then receive every section and signal category, which is the built-in behaviour.
* The default contains no project, initiative, or task-column focus. Those choices stay per agent.

The order of precedence is: the agent's custom focus, then the organization default, then the built-in heartbeat. Resetting one agent returns it to the organization default.

## Needs attention

This section appears only when something needs fixing:

* **No accessible projects**: the agent cannot see any project, so its heartbeat stays empty. Select **Grant projects** to open the Agents page. Agents with an organization role or a personal owner already inherit access and are not listed.
* **Duplicate names**: two or more agents share a display name. The table adds a short key or creation-date label to tell them apart. Select **Rename** to open the Agents page.
* **Never woken**: agents that have not read a heartbeat yet. Select **Show agents** to filter the table to them.

## Agent table

Use the status tabs to show **All**, **Receiving** (a heartbeat in the last 7 days), **Customized**, **Idle** (no heartbeat for more than 7 days), or **Never woken** agents. Search matches agent names, projects, and focus. **Scope** and **Project** narrow the list further.

Each row shows the agent's scope and projects, whether it uses the **Org default** or a **Custom** focus, its heartbeat status, its last heartbeat, and the items surfaced per day over the last 7 days. Sort by **Last heartbeat**; agents that never woke always appear last.

On larger screens, select a row to open the **Live preview** on the right. It shows what Atoll would surface if that agent woke now, grouped by type, and links to **Configure** for that agent. The preview never changes a saved policy.

## Bulk changes

Select agents with their checkboxes, then:

* **Apply focus…** sets the same sections and signal categories on every selected agent. Each agent keeps its own project, initiative, and task-column selections.
* **Reset to default** removes the selected agents' custom focus so they use the organization default.

You can change up to 100 agents at a time. You must be able to manage every selected agent, and every selected agent must be enabled; otherwise Atoll rejects the whole change. Disabled and revoked agents are not listed on this page because they do not receive heartbeats.

## Per-agent settings

Select **Configure** in the preview or on a mobile card to change one agent's sections, signal categories, project and initiative focus, and per-project task columns. See [Heartbeat API](/api-reference/heartbeat.md) for the endpoints behind these pages.
